Every child starts somewhere. Your child doesn't need to be athletic, coordinated, flexible or know anything about martial arts before beginning. Our instructors teach new students step by step, helping them develop confidence and learn at a pace appropriate for their age and experience.

Do I Need Any Experience to Start Karate?
No. Most students begin martial arts with no previous experience. We introduce the fundamentals before expecting students to perform more complicated techniques.
What Happens in Your Child’s First Karate Class?
Your child’s first karate class at Stevens Martial Arts is designed to be a positive and comfortable introduction to martial arts. No previous experience is needed, and we don’t expect a beginner to walk in already knowing how to punch, kick, stand, or even tie a karate belt. That’s our job to teach them.
When your child arrives, one of our instructors will introduce them to the training area and explain a few simple basics so they know what to expect. Parents are welcome to watch, which can make that first experience more comfortable for a new student.

The class begins together as a group, but during much of the lesson we divide students into smaller groups based on age and experience level. We normally have several instructors working with the class, allowing a brand-new student to receive beginner-level instruction rather than simply being expected to follow more experienced students. During that first class, your child will begin learning basic martial arts movements while also practicing important skills such as listening, following directions, focus, coordination and speaking with confidence. Most importantly, we want your child to leave their first class feeling successful. They don't have to be perfect, athletic or fearless. They just have to be willing to try.
It's Normal to Feel Nervous Before Your First Martial Arts Class
After teaching martial arts for decades, I've seen thousands of students walk through the door for their first class. Many are nervous. Children may be shy and stay close to their parents. That's completely normal. A good beginner martial arts program shouldn't expect you to already know martial arts. Our job is to teach you. The hardest part is often simply walking through the door for the first time.
